Il Borgo is a stunning 17th century masseria set among lush, flower-filled formal gardens on a huge country estate between   Mount Etna and the Mediterranean. There are views of both sea and mountain, and the house, with its palm-shaded courtyard and white-stucco, ivy-draped outbuildings, is simply gorgeous.

There is a large leisure area with swimming pool (18 x 9m), a spa with Turkish bath and shower, a summer kitchen, an outdoor dining area and two further self-contained bedrooms. There is even a small estate church – ideal for weddings or christenings. Beyond the formal garden and pool the grounds stretch for over 100 hectares, with orange groves, olive groves and pastures, woods, a stream running through a valley, and a rich variety of Mediterranean plants and trees.
The outbuildings have been converted into ten bedrooms, decorated with consummate taste and simplicity, and all open straight onto the courtyard, itself entered through an evocative stone arch.
With air-con, ensuite bathrooms and mini-fridges, they are as independent as rooms in a boutique hotel. The villa is usually rented with staff.
A huge reception room opening onto a stone-vaulted patio is a perfect setting for breakfast, while the main dining room opens onto the exquisite formal gardens — where archeological remains dating back to the Bronze Age have been discovered.

We like

The quintessential Sicilian architecture and atmosphere — it could be a location for the Montalbano TV series!
Exploring the grounds — woods, a stream, olive groves, citrus groves — and even Byzantine ruins! The lovely brand-new boutique style bathrooms with towelling bathrobes and toiletries.
The views of Etna and the blue Mediterranean.
It is very hard to leave the estate, even for a day trip, but we would recommend organising a private jeep tour of Etna.

We think

It would be hard to find a more perfect setting for a wedding or christening — it even has its own church. Because the villa comes with owners on site and full staff, staying here is like having a hotel all to yourself, with full catering and service available.
The boutique-hotel style bedrooms, the gardens, the pool, the Turkish bath allow you to give guests an unforgettable holiday while they are attending your event. That it’s a true oasis, but just 20 minutes’ drive to Catania airport — making organisation easy if you have a lot of guests arriving.

Things to do

Il Borgo is located in a central position, between Catania and Siracusa and it is a perfect starting poit to visit the south – east area of Sicily.

  • The nearest beach ( Agnone bagni) is about 2,4 miles driving from the villa.
  • The island of Ortigia (Siracusa) now linked to the mainland by a short bridge, was the first part of Siracusa to be settled, and is today a jewel of Sicilian Baroque, though also retaining fascinating traces of its ancient Greek and medieval past.
  • The most interesting area on the mainland is the archeological zone, which includes one of the largest Greek theatres in Italy, whose excellent acoustics you will experience if you manage to attend the annual season of ancient Greek drama.
  • The incredible Baroque towns of the Val di Noto (also with UNESCO world heritage status)
  • The captivating nature reserve, L’Oasi di Vendicari.
  • Wine tasting and visit at Buonivini of Planeta winery.
  • The fisherman village of Marzameni.
  • The Baroque Historic centre of Catania.
  • Etna Volcano and Taormina about  one hour driving
