This fascinating villa was created out of the old stables of a villa, amid a grand feudal estate where citrus trees and olives grow in a verdant valley looking out to the distant blue sea of Selinunte.

Find out more

L’Antica Scuderia is a large, long stone building, surrounded by a gorgeous garden, overlooking a swimming pool (11m x 5m) with waterfall.
Both restoration and style are outstanding in their attention to detail: the floors are of ancient terracotta interspersed with Sicilian majolica; and a venerable collection of ample leather sofas and antique furniture is mixed with artefacts from India and Morocco collected in the owner’s travels.
The spacious living area has three huge windows – originally, the entrances to the stables – and a raised gallery where once upon a time the hay was stacked.
This now leads to a small study and the sleeping area. A large patio overlooking the swimming pool and garden is the perfect place for summer evenings.
The villa is part of a large estate with other villas, but privacy is absolute and there is an independent entrance.

We like

The style — an aristocratic version of shabby chic! English country gentleman meets Sicilian rustic!
Sitting on the patio in the evening when the only sound is that of the little waterfall running from the pool in the garden.
The quirky rustic kitchen.
Visiting the temples of Selinunte as the sun is setting

We think

The villa is equally adapted to a family or a group of friends. Teenagers or anyone seeking movida will be disappointed!
It is idea for anyone who wants to live in the heart of the Sicilian countryside, far from the crowds. Selinunte, with its beautiful temples and beach, is 15km away, and the fascinating town of Mazara del Vallo makes a great day out!

A really beautiful property

July 22, 2014
Hi Fabrizio, Sorry for the delay in response – it’s been a busy week back at work and school! We had a wonderful time at l’Antica Scuderia – a really beautiful property, in such a stunning part of Sicily – and the weather for our week was magnificent. The house was lovely, with pretty much everything we needed, and the pool and gardens simply incredible. We had so much fun in the pool and in the gardens and we loved all the wildlife – lizards, frogs and nesting warblers – and also the rarer birds in the area such as the bee-eaters, golden orials, eagle and falcon around the villa. Our ten year old in particularly just loved exploring the gardens and watching the ants and lizards.
The house is very well located for visiting the north western tip of the island and we loved the nature reserve at El Golfo and the wild flamingoes on the Trapani salt pans. We also had a great visit to the excellent Floria winery at Marsala, saw the amazing temples and ruins at Seguesta and Selinunte, and enjoyed the fish market at Selinunte one morning. We have so many more places left to explore – we’ll have to come back again! Thank you so much for all your help with organising and planning the trip – it was a fantastic holiday and we’ve all returned to the cold of the UK suntanned and rested, so we’re looking forward to returning to the beautiful island again very soon.

Things to do

Some things not to miss in you are staying at the Antica Scuderia.

  • In July and August, the Orestiadi, an international festival of theatre, music, art and film, takes place among the ruins of Gibellina, a village destroyed by an earthquake in 1968.
  • The fantastically sited temples of Selinunte.
  • The historic town of Mazara del Vallo whose centre is reminiscent of an oriental kasbah – oh, and don’t miss the statue of the Dancing Satyr, discovered by fishermen, and now with its own dedicated museum.
  • The medieval town of Erice.
  • A day at Rocco Forte’s Verdura golf resort.
  • Torre del Falco beach.
  • A day at La Pineta  at Marinella, a great lido with a very good restaurant.
  • Visits and tastings in the numerous wineries and olive oil farms.
